Global Wetland Outlook 2025

Valuing, conserving, restoring and financing wetlands

The Global Wetland Outlook 2025 offers the most current global evaluation of the condition, trends, value and policy responses concerning wetlands. Produced by the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Convention on Wetlands, it synthesises recent scientific and economic evidence to examine the extent of wetland loss and degradation, the ecosystem services that wetlands provide, and the actions required to achieve international restoration and conservation targets.

It reveals that at least 400 million hectares of wetlands have been lost since 1970, with nearly a quarter of those remaining in a degraded state. These losses significantly impact water availability, biodiversity, climate stability and human well-being. The report estimates that the world’s remaining wetlands contribute up to $39 trillion in benefits each year, yet conservation funding remains far below what is required.

The Global Wetland Outlook 2025 presents clear pathways for action, integrating scientific evidence, economic valuation and policy guidance, to scale up wetland restoration, strengthen protection and align financial investments with sustainability goals. Dive into the data, explore the trends, and discover why wetlands matter more than ever.
